From Vulgar Latin root *salāre, from a change in conjugation of Latin salīre, present active infinitive of saliō (I salt), from sal. Compare Italian salare, French saler, Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan salar, Friulian salâ, also Aromanian ãnsar, ãnsãrari.
