Etymology[edit]

1967, From Russian самиздат (samizdát, self-publishing), from сам (sam, self) + издат (izdát), abbrev. of издательство (izdátel’stvo, publishing house). Compare Russian Госиздат (Gosizdát, State Publisher).

samizdat (plural samizdats)

Paryska kultura (« Parisian Culture »), Polish samizdat from the 1980's.
  1. (uncountable, often attributive) The secret copying and sharing of illegal publications, chiefly in the Soviet Union; underground publishing and its publications.
  2. (countable) A samizdat publication.
