From Vulgar Latin or Late Latin *excadēre (“fall away”), from Latin ex- + cadere, present active infinitive of cadō. Cognate with Catalan escaure, French échoir, Friulian scjadê, Portuguese esquecer, Romanian scădea, Spanish escaecer.
