From earlier *scēadl, *scǣdel, from Proto-Germanic *skaidilō (part in the hair, crown, summit), from Proto-Indo-European *skÁit- (to cut, part, spearate, divide). Cognate with Old Dutch skēthila, Old High German sceitila, skeitila.
