Uncertain.[1] May be from Proto-Indo-European *(s)krew-t- or *(s)kroy-t-, extended from *(s)ker- (to cut). Probably cognate with Proto-Germanic *skraudaną (to cut up, shred) (whence Old High German scrōtan).[2] Compare also scrūpus.
