From Ottoman Turkish سچمك ‎(seçmek, to choose, sort, discern, distinguish, notice, elect), from Proto-Turkic *sEč- ‎(to choose, select).[1]

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] ‎(seç-, to choose, discern), Azeri seçmək ‎(to choose, distinguish), Turkmen seçmek ‎(to choose).
