[edit]Compound of sekolah (“school”) + tinggi (“high”), calque of Dutch hogeschool (“hogeschool, polytechnic, college”, literally “high school”). Semantic loan from Japanese 大學 (daigaku, “university; college”) for sense of university during Japanese occupation.
