Etymology[edit]
Unadapted borrowing from English high school. First attested in 1963.[1]
Noun[edit]
- A high school, a North American or Australian secondary school.
- I went to the teacher and asked her, if Lee could continue in high school, the Mrs. knows, but "no", said the teacher, "it is not worth it, no matter how good she is, she cannot be anything, when she is colored".
- 1950, Astrid Lindgren, Kati i Amerika[2], page 106:
- So that is why Mr. Whitney was so happy that Bob had gotten his solid business skills at a reputable college, and Pamela and Fred, still only in high school, were going to college too even if he would have to work his way through every used car throughout the U.S. to afford it.
- 2016 July 4, “Gloria Ray Karlmark”, in Sommar[3], via Sveriges Radio:
- As a 14-year-old, she herself fought against the racism that segregated black Americans from whites, when she and eight other African-American youth applied to a white high school in the city of Little Rock in Arkansas.
