[edit]From Ottoman Turkish سلام (selam), from Old Anatolian Turkish سلام, from Arabic سَلَام (salām) (the sense 'greeting' of the Arabic word is likely a semantic loan from Aramaic שְׁלָמָא / ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šəlāmā), compare its Hebrew cognate שלום (shalóm, “hello”)), likely via Classical Persian سلام (salām).
Cognate with Gagauz seläm (“hi”), and Azerbaijani salam (“hi, hello”).
