[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish سرگی (sergi, “a platform, mat or carpet on which wares are set out for sale, a temporary stall for sale of goods or a collection of such stalls, a kind of fair, an exhibition, a public pay-office”),[1][2] from Ottoman Turkish سرمك (sermek, “to spread out, to lay in order on the ground, to hang up in full length on a line”), from Proto-Turkic *ser- (“to endure, to be patient, to stay immobile, to spread”),[3][4] morphologically ser- + -gi. Cognates with Azerbaijani sərgi, Turkmen sergi, Karakhanid سَرُو (serü, “shelf”).
