Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *skūmba. Cognate to Gothic *𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐌱𐌰𐌽 (*skiuban, cast, shove) and 𐌰𐍆𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐌱𐌰𐌽 (afskiuban, cast away, shove off) (cf. English shove, German schieben), Lithuanian skumbù and skùbti (to hurry up), Proto-Slavic *skuti (cf. Bulgarian ску́бя (skúbja, to pluck, tear), Macedonian скубе (skube)),[1] hence also Persian آشفتن (âšoftan, to agitate) and Sanskrit क्षुभ्यति (kṣubhyati, to shake, be agitated).
