Etymology[edit]
Loss of /b/ in Standard Albanian shqim and Gheg Albanian shkym.
From Old Albanian shqymb, from Proto-Albanian *skūmba. Cognate to Gothic *𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐌱𐌰𐌽 (*skiuban, “cast, shove”) and 𐌰𐍆𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐌱𐌰𐌽 (afskiuban, “cast away, shove off”), Lithuanian skumbù and skùbti (“to hurry up”) and Proto-Slavic *skuti.[1]
