From Malay sijil, from Arabic سِجِلّ (sijill, register, registry, record, list, log), from Byzantine Greek σιγίλλιον, σιγίλλον (sigíllion, sigíllon), ultimately from Latin sigillum (little sign). Doublet of segel.
