From Proto-Brythonic *skuɨd, from Proto-Celtic *skētos (shield), from Proto-Indo-European *skeyt-, from *skey- (to cut, separate). Cognate with Cornish skoes (shield), Welsh ysgwyd (shield), Irish sciath (shield). Related to Latin scūtum (shield) and Russian щит (ščit).
