Etymology
From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Baltic *slankā-, formed by vowel gradation from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *slenk- “to cut, to twist, to wind, to meander; to crawl, to creep”. The original meaning was probably “crawler, creeper”, because of this bird's terrestrial habits and low flight. Cognates include Lithuanian slánka, slankà, slãnkė, Old Prussian slanke (“large woodcock”), Russian слу́ка (slúka), Ukrainian слу́ква (slúkva), Czech sluka, Polish słąka, śląka.[1]
