From Middle Low German slû, from Proto-Germanic *slūha, of uncertain ultimate origin, but perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)leuǵ (to crawl, slide), if the original sense referred to sneaking and sliding.[1] Cognate with German schlau.
