Cognate of Azerbaijani sormaq, Turkmen soramak (to ask, query), Uzbek soʻramoq (to ask, request), Kazakh сұрау (sūrau, to ask, inquire), Tuvan сураар (suraar, to seek, look for) etc. Also a cognate of Mongolian сурах (surax, to learn, study, ask), a Turkic borrowing.
