Etymology 1

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish صورمق (sormak). Cognate of Azerbaijani sormaq, Turkmen soramak (to ask, query), Uzbek soʻramoq (to ask, request), Kazakh сұрау (sūrau, to ask, inquire), Tuvan сураар (suraar, to seek, look for) etc. Also a cognate of Mongolian сурах (surax, to learn, study, ask), a Turkic borrowing.
