[edit]From spel (“game”) + -tje with lengthening of the root vowel as in glaasje etc. Doublet of spelletje. Compare the plurals spelen and spellen, which also show a secondary semantic distinction.
In the sense “toy” perhaps in part a new derivation from the related verb spelen (“to play”).
