  1. (UK, military, historical) A body of officers and soldiers who performed engineering and siege duties, made reconnaissances, etc. during the wars of Wellington.
  2. (India, military, historical) A body of British officers serving on the permanent Indian establishment, appointed from it to do duty with native regiments, etc.
