Late Middle English, from Latin staphisagria, from Ancient Greek σταφίς (staphís, grape) (from σταφυλή (staphulḗ, bunch of grapes)) + ἀγρία (agría, wild) (literally "living in the fields," from ἀγρός (agrós, field)).
