1660, from Neo-Latin sternum, from Ancient Greek στέρνον (stérnon, “chest, breastbone, heart”), from Proto-Indo-European *stern- (“forehead, chest, side”). Related to Old English steorn (“forehead”), German Stirn (“forehead”).
