Lower Sorbian

Etymology

This section or entry lacks references or sources. Please help verify this information by adding appropriate citations. You can also discuss it at the Tea Room.

From Proto-Slavic *stolъ (table), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *stalas (table). Most Slavic cognates of this word mean ‘table’ rather than ‘chair’, except Old Church Slavonic столъ (stolŭ, seat, throne) and Bulgarian стол (stol, chair). The fact that the Sorbian word means ‘chair’ rather than ‘table’ is probably due to the influence of German Low German stol and German Stuhl.
