Etymology[edit]

Probably from Vulgar Latin root *extrāmūtāre, instead of Latin trānsmūtāre. Equivalent to stră- +‎ muta. Compare Aromanian strãmut, strãmutari, Friulian stramudâ, Sardinian stramudai.
