[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃-. Cognate with Ancient Greek στόρνυμι (stórnumi, “scatter”), στρατός (stratós, “army, people, body of men”), Old English strewian (English strew) and Latin sternō, strāges, strāmen and torus. Also cognate with Ancient Greek στρῶμα (strôma) (whence strōma).
