suspension bridge (plural suspension bridges)

  1. A bridge whose deck or roadway is suspended from cables.

Usage notes

In a suspension bridge, the deck is attached by vertical suspenders to thick suspension cables that from a catenary shape. By contrast, in a cable-stayed bridge, straight cables attach the deck directly to the pillars.
