From a Berber language; compare Tamahaq tăkarḍe, Ghadames takərḍa. From Arabic قِرْطَاس (qirṭās), from Aramaic קַרְטֵיסָא / ܩܪܛܝܣܐ (qarṭīsā), from Ancient Greek χάρτης (khártēs).
