Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Berber *a-mur (“portion, spear, lance”)[1], ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *m-r-ḥ (“lance, spear”).
The semantic shift from "spear, lance" to "portion, part" is due shares being traditionally allocated by drawing lots using sticks or lances (cf. Tarifit tasɣart (“stick, portion”), and also Arabic سَهْم (sahm, “arrow, share, portion”)).
Compare Tuareg ǝṃur (“arrow”), Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⵎⵓⵔ (amur, “portion, allotment”), Kabyle amur (“part, portion”), Tachawit amur (“share, portion”), Tashelhit amur (“portion, goad, arrow”), Medieval Tashelhit اومورن (umuren, “spears, lances”), Egyptian mrḥ (“lance”), Ugaritic 𐎎𐎗𐎈 (mrḥ, “spear, lance”), Akkadian 𒊍𒈠𒊒 (azmarû, “spear, lance”), Arabic رُمْح (rumḥ, “spear”), Hebrew רומח (rómakh, “spear”), and Beja malkḁ (“spear”) (note that Beja *k corresponds with Afrasian *ḥ).

Etymology 2
[edit]Borrowed from Moroccan Amazigh ⵜⴰⵎⵓⵔⵜ (tamurt, “country, land”), from Proto-Berber *tamurt (“earth”)[2], ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *m-r (“field”).
Cognates include Awjila tämûrt (“earth”), Siwi tamārt (“earth”), Kabyle and Tarifit tamurt (“land, earth”), Central Atlas Tamazight ⵜⴰⵎⵓⵔⵜ (tamurt, “land, earth, region, countryside”), Tunisian Berber tammurt, tmurt (“earth, country, city”), Nefusa tamûrṭ (“earrh”), Ghadames tammurt (“earth, soil”), Tuareg təmurt (“nation, people, land”), Sabaean 𐩣𐩧𐩥 (mrw, “fertile land”), Ngas mar (“farm”), Kanakuru mə́rà (“farming”), Gera màalà (“farm”), Egyptian mr (“pasture, meadow”), Somali mir (“Pasture of the cattle at night”), and possibly Blin maûra (“cattle storage”).
