Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *tăp- (to find).[1] Cognate with dialectal Turkish tapmak (to find), Crimean Tatar tapmaq, Turkmen tapmak, Uzbek topmoq, Uyghur تاپماق (tapmaq), Chuvash туп (tup). Not cognate with Turkish tapmak (to worship), which is derived from a different Proto-Turkic root.
