Possibly from Vulgar Latin *tastāre, from taxitāre, frequentative of Late Latin taxāre, present active infinitive of taxō, from Classical Latin tangō ‎(I touch). Compare Catalan and Occitan tastar, Old French taster, Friulian tastâ, Venetian tastar, Sicilian tastari.
