Possibly from Vulgar Latin *tastāre, from taxitāre, frequentative of Late Latin taxāre, present active infinitive of taxō, from Classical Latin tangō (I touch). Compare Catalan and Occitan tastar, Old French taster, Friulian tastâ, Venetian tastar, Sicilian tastari.
