Inherited from Malay tedung (cobra), probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t1ɗɔɔŋ (stalk, tail) (compare Old Javanese *taruṅ, Banjarese tadung (snake) and Balinese ᬢᭂᬤᬸᬂ (tedung)).
