Etymology
[edit]Compound of terima (“receive”) + kasih either meaning “care; affection” or “to give”. The exact meaning of kasih in part of the phrase is disputed:
- According to Shellabear (1912), the phrase is a shortening of saya sudah banyak terima kasih (literally “I have received a lot of care”).[1]
- According to Asmah (2014), it originated among traders where kasih meant "to give", as it still does in various vernacular varieties of Malay; thus terima kasih would literally mean "[I] receive [what you] give" or "[I] receive [your] gift".[2]
