  1. (botany) Any of the genus Thalia of tropical plants found in aquatic or marshy habitats.

      Thalias are herbaceous perennials with long-stalked, calathea- or canna-like, all-basal leaves, the stalks of which enfold each other toward their bases to produce false stems.
