From Western Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *timəʀaq. Compare Bikol Central tingga, Malay timah (“tin”), Maranao timbega', Sambali tingga, Waray-Waray tingga, Iban timah, and Malay timah. Also possibly from Sanskrit तीर (tīra) or तीव्र (tīvra, “tin”).
