Probably from a Vulgar Latin *toccāre, *tuccāre, of Germanic or onomatopoeic origin. Compare French toucher, Friulian tocjâ, Portuguese, Spanish, and Venetian tocar; Romanian toca; Romansch tutgar; Sicilian tuccari; Sardinian toccai.
