[edit]From Middle Dutch toecomste (“arrival, visit”). Equivalent to toe + komst. Temporal use developed first in the adjective toekomstig. Such use of the noun (ca. 1800) appears to follow German Zukunft and the word is most often used since the 18th century and has been attested since the 14th century. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
