Borrowing from English topaz, from Old French topace, from the Ancient Greek proper noun Τοπάζιος ‎(Topázios), ancient name of St. John's Island, Egypt, in the Red Sea, believed to be the first discovered source of the mineral τοπάζιον ‎(topázion, peridot).
