Possibly borrowed from Malay turut (following suit), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *tuʀut (to follow instructions, follow an example; carry along, give in, allow something to happen). Compare Kapampangan tulut (to allow; to concede), Bikol Central tugot (to allow; to permit), Cebuano tugot (to approve; to yield), and Hiligaynon tugut (permission).
