Unknown.

Perhaps from Punic 𐤆𐤓𐤏 (zrʿ, seed), although via a Vulgar Latin *zerula.[1] Compare Hebrew זֶרַע (zeraʿ, seed), Aramaic זַרְעָא (zarʿā, seed) and Arabic زَرْع (zarʕ, seed).
