Etymology

Unknown. Possibly from an alteration of an earlier *vânced, from a Vulgar Latin root *vincidus, from Latin vincō (to defeat, conquer) (compare Italian vincido (flexible, pliable, foldable, soft; withered)), or alternatively derived from vinciō (tie, restrain).
