From Old Danish wæn. From Old Norse vænn. From Proto-Germanic *wēniz, from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁-, the same root as vinr. Related to Icelandic vænn, Faroese vænur, Norwegian Nynorsk ven, Swedish vän.
