[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r/g-wa (“village”). Cognate with Burmese ရွာ (rwa, “village”), Horpa rə və (“village”), Yongning Narua ʁwɤ³³ and Rawang rvwá (“village”). Compare Lhao Vo vo, Zaiwa wa and Longchuan Achang o⁵⁵.
