Etymology

From vak (“occupation, profession”) +‎ idiotisme (“idiotism, severe mental retardation”), calque of German Fachidiotismus, likely a calque of French idiotisme du métier, apparently first used by Marx in Misère de la philosophie. The term entered common usage in 1968, at the time of Marxist student protests.
