Etymology[edit]

Cognate with Danish valmue. First part vall- from valen, cf. English welk, German welken (to wither, decay). The second part is cognate with German Mohn, Ancient Greek μήκων (mḗkōn) (Doric μάκων (mákōn)) and Church Slavonic макъ (makŭ) (Bulgarian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian мак).
