Cognate with Danish valmue, Swedish vallmo, Ancient Greek μήκων (mḗkōn) (Doric μάκων (mákōn)) and Church Slavonic макъ (makŭ) (Bulgarian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian мак, Czech mák).
