Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
The original meaning of gestampte pot in this phrase is probably the same as that of stamppot, any of several dishes of mashed potatoes and vegetables, typically served with meat and gravy, thought to be preferred by common people over the haute cuisine of the upper crust.
