From Proto-Albanian *a)uaϑā, from Proto-Indo-European *h2ues- 'to dwell, abide, pass/stay the night'. Cognate to Sanskrit वास (vāsá-, sojourn, stay, spending the night), प्रौष्ठ (próṣṭha-, lodging)[1]. Alternatively from an unattested *vartë, from Proto-Albanian *wartā, close to Tocharian B wärto (garten), Irish fert (grave mound), Old English weorð (yard)[2].
