Old Galician-Portuguese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Derived from Latin venēnum, though it is not clear how. The /ˈi/ is straightforwardly accounted for by the late 'vulgar' variant venīnum; cf. Old Spanish venino. In the unexpected survival of intervocalic /n/ (let alone twice), some or even all of the following factors may have been involved:

  • Partial degree of blending or compromise with the literary Latin form venēnum.
  • A rejection of the expected *v(ẽ)inho due to impending homophony with vinho (wine).[1]
  • Influence from neighbouring Ibero-Romance varieties that regularly retain /-n-/; cf. especially the Old Spanish variant vinino.

Its modern counterparts, Galician veleno and Portuguese veneno, appear to have been borrowed anew from Latin.

An ache that produces a large swelling appears on the flanks of the horse and necrotic tissue spreads from it. This [condition] results from a poor-quality saddle or an excessive load weighing down on [the horse]. Sometimes it goes on for a considerable time, resulting in a mass of necrotic tissue that reaches down to the bones and from which pus or water comes out.
