Inherited from Proto-Germanic *wargaz > *werg, from Proto-Indo-European *werg̑ʰ- (to choke). Cognate with Old Saxon warag, Old High German warc, Old Norse vargr (outlaw, wolf) (Swedish varg (wolf)). See also English warg.
