Dutch

Etymology

From wed (bet) +‎ strijd (fight), as a calque of German Wettstreit (competition). The German word has never been common in the sense of an organised match or contest, however. This sense, therefore, must have developed in Dutch either independently or as a calque of another German word, namely Wettkampf.

  • audio:(file)
