Inherited from Old Polish wesoły, wiesieły, wiesioły, wiesoły (compare wiesiołek (“evening primrose, Oenothera”)), influenced by Old Czech veselý, from Proto-Slavic *vȅselъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *weselas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wes-e-lo-s, from *h₁wésus (“good”).
